Human Eye Anatomy: An Introduction and Its Functions

Learning about human eye anatomy can be very complicated. Eyes are organs for vision and sensitive to outside conditions. By looking at the different structures of the human eye and their functions, we will be closely watching a different structure.

Human Eye Anatomy and Parts

So, what is human eye anatomy? It consists of many parts just like human liver which we will discuss below:

  1. Sclera
Sclera is the outermost layer of the eyeball. Sclera is the white part (and opaque) of the eyeball. The muscles responsible for moving the eyeballs are attached to the eyeball.
  2. Cornea
At the front of eyeball, sclera continues into the cornea. The cornea is the dome-shaped transparent part of eyeball. Rays of light from the outside world pass through the cornea before reaching the lens. Together with the lens, cornea responsible for focusing light on the retina.
  3. Choroid
Choroid is the middle layer of eyeball which is located between sclera and retina. It provides nutrients and oxygen to the outer surface of retina.
  4. Anterior
The space between cornea and lens is known as the anterior chamber. It is filled with a fluid called aqueous humor. The anterior chamber is also known as the anterior cavity.
  5. Aqueous humor
Aqueous humor is a transparent liquid circulating in the anterior chamber. It provides oxygen and nutrients to the inside of eye and pressure fluid that helps maintain the eye shape.
  6. Posterior chamber
Posterior is larger than the area of the anterior chamber. It is located opposite the anterior chamber behind the lens. Posterior chamber is filled with a fluid called vitreous humor. Posterior chamber is also referred to as the vitreous body.

Actually, there are many other parts such as vitreous humor, iris, ciliary muscle, ciliary body, zonules, lens, pupil, retina, fovea, optic disk, the eye muscles, and so on from human eye anatomy.
